John Updike, 1932-2009

John Updike once said that if there is such a thing as reincarnation he'd like to come back as a turtle because he likes the smell of grass and the sound of rain on the roof.

Over the next few days, if you see a turtle who looks particularly happy, it might be Mr. Updike.

I like 2009

I LIKE 2009, and not just because we have a new president. I hate writing 8s. I hate them so much that I haven't made the mistake all month of writing 2008 instead of 2009 on a check or a form. 2008--yuck. The year I really hated was 1988., which wasn't that bad in terms of real life.
